Are you pregnant? 5 tips to stay healthy

Are you pregnant? 5 tips to stay healthy
Pregnancy is one of the most difficult, but also the most beautiful periods in a woman's life. Carrying a new life made of pure love, and the emotions are certainly many and mixed. However, for this new life to be healthy, the mother must be healthy too. That is why she must take care of her health as much as anything else during this period – and not only.

To stay healthy during this period, there are some important tips that you should follow and you will see them below.

#1. Eat right

Eating healthy is extremely important for pregnant women. Your baby needs healthy food, not sugar and fats. That is why put in your diet lots of colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, foods rich in calcium and foods with low saturated fat content.

#2. Take your vitamins

Make sure you are getting enough folic acid and calcium. These, but also other essential vitamins and minerals can be obtained from food, but also from a multivitamin. Spinach, oranges, broccoli and beans are rich in folic acid. Milk, yogurt and spinach also have calcium. A daily prenatal vitamin, however, can help you ensure that you are getting the right amount. Ask and discuss with your doctor about taking a daily prenatal vitamin.

#3. Stay hydrated

The pregnant woman's body needs more water than normal. Aim for eight or more glasses of water each day.

#4. Avoid certain foods

There are some foods that women should avoid eating while they are pregnant. Do not eat raw or undercooked meats, liver, sushi, raw eggs (also mayonnaise), soft cheeses and unpasteurized milk. Raw and unpasteurized animal products can cause food poisoning. Some fish, even when cooked, may have high mercury content.

#5. Do not drink alcohol

Women should not drink alcohol before and during their pregnancy and during breastfeeding. Alcohol consumption increases the risk of having a baby with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). FASD can cause abnormal facial features, severe learning difficulties and behavioral issues.

Alcohol can affect a baby's health in the early stages of pregnancy, before the woman knows she is pregnant. Therefore, women who plan to become pregnant should also not drink alcohol.
