Iron

Iron is a metal essential for the formation of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to the body's tissues. The body stores iron mainly in the form of ferritin.

Role of iron in the body

Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin, to the normal oxygen transport in the body, to the normal energy metabolism, to the normal cognitive function, to the normal functioning of the immune system, and to the reduction of fatigue and tiredness. These are the approved health claims for iron based on Regulation (EC) 1924/2006.

Sources of iron in the diet

Red meat, milk, eggs, legumes, dried fruits, and cereals are dietary sources of iron. Iron from animal sources is generally absorbed more easily than plant iron. Vitamin C contributes to increased iron absorption when taken together.

Important warning for children

Iron supplements are one of the most common causes of accidental poisoning in young children. Always keep iron supplements out of sight and reach of children, in a safe, closed container. In case of accidental ingestion by a child, contact the Poison Control Center or seek immediate medical attention.

When might you need a supplement

Iron deficiency is relatively common and may be associated with symptoms such as persistent fatigue, weakness, or hair loss. However, taking an iron supplement without confirmed deficiency is not recommended, as excessive iron intake can be harmful. A blood test can confirm deficiency, in consultation with your doctor.

Forms of iron supplements

Available in capsules, tablets, and liquid form, in various chemical forms with different absorption and tolerance characteristics by the digestive tract.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why shouldn't I take iron without a blood test?

Excessive iron intake can be harmful. A blood test confirms if there is a real deficiency, in consultation with your doctor.

How do I safely store iron at home?

Always out of sight and reach of children, in a safe container, as it is one of the most common causes of accidental poisoning in children.

Which foods help iron absorption?

Vitamin C, when taken with iron foods or supplements, helps increase its absorption.

Can I take iron with calcium?

Calcium can reduce iron absorption. It is recommended to take them at a different time, following pharmacist's advice.

What symptoms may indicate iron deficiency?

Persistent fatigue, weakness, or hair loss may be associated with low iron levels, however, diagnosis always requires a blood test and medical evaluation.
