Calcium

Calcium is one of the most abundant minerals in the human body. Approximately 99% is found in bones and teeth, where it serves as a key structural component.

The role of calcium in the body

Calcium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, normal muscle function, normal nerve transmission, normal blood clotting, and normal energy metabolism. When combined with vitamin D, calcium also helps reduce bone density loss in postmenopausal women, provided that the daily calcium intake is at least 400mg. These are the approved health claims for calcium under Regulation (EC) 1924/2006. Calcium does not have an approved claim for reducing cancer risk, regulating blood pressure, or "calming" the nervous system.

Dietary sources of calcium

Dairy products, green leafy vegetables, almonds, sesame seeds, legumes, and fortified foods are good sources of calcium.

Very important interaction warnings

Calcium interacts with many medications and should always be taken in consultation with a doctor or pharmacist, especially if you are taking:

• Antihypertensive drugs or calcium channel blockers
• Bisphosphonates (drugs for osteoporosis)
• Fluoroquinolones or tetracyclines (antibiotics, usually require at least 2-3 hours apart from calcium)
• Tamoxifen
• Fluoride

Individuals with hyperparathyroidism or a history of cancer should not take calcium supplements without medical advice.

When a supplement may be needed

Groups with increased needs include postmenopausal women, adolescents, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and individuals with limited dairy intake. Consult your doctor for the appropriate dosage.

Forms of calcium supplements

Available in capsules, tablets, chewable tablets, and effervescent tablets, often combined with vitamin D for better utilization.

Frequently asked questions

Should I take calcium with vitamin D?

The combination is common, as vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium. Consult a pharmacist for the appropriate choice.

Can I take calcium with antibiotics?

Certain antibiotics (tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones) require at least a 2-3 hour gap from calcium. Consult a pharmacist.

How much calcium do I need daily?

Needs vary depending on age and condition. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for the appropriate dosage in your specific case.

Is calcium safe for people with kidney stones?

Always consult your doctor before taking it, as the appropriate approach depends on the type of stones.

Which form of calcium is best absorbed?

There are various forms (carbonate, citrate calcium) with different absorption characteristics. Consult a pharmacist for the appropriate choice.
