Cleansing Sensitive Area: a Product with Different Rules

The cleansing liquid for the sensitive area is not just a soap-based lotion with a different label. It cleans the vulva, i.e. the external area, without removing the thin hydrolipidic layer that protects it. That’s why the formulas are usually soap-free, with mild surfactants and pH adjusted to more acidic values than common body products. The difference is mainly noticeable in those who are easily irritated, frequently epilate or exercise daily.

The most common misconception at the pharmacy counter is that a strong, antiseptic wash solves discomfort. In reality, aggressive washing and scented wipes often exacerbate it. The vagina has its own self-cleaning mechanism, so the goal is daily, gentle care of the external area rather than its disinfection.

Which Format Suits Your Daily Routine

Cleansing Liquid for Every Day

It’s the basic choice. One application per day, with lukewarm water and a small amount, is enough for most women. On days with heavy sweating or during the period, two applications can be made without overdoing it.

More Refreshing or Soothing Versions

Formulas with chamomile, aloe vera or panthenol are chosen during periods of sensitivity, after epilation or after the beach. The more refreshing ones, with a slightly invigorating sensation, are preferred in summer and during exercise.

Vaginal Washes

Washes with acetic acid are a separate category and are not a daily use product. They are done when recommended by a gynecologist, for a specific reason and for a limited period. Their indiscriminate use removes the normal flora and usually worsens the feeling of discomfort.

In Which Cases More Is Needed

Cleansing covers hygiene, not the feeling of dryness or itching. For that, there are vaginal gels and the section for vaginal moisturizing, while the general picture of care is described in the hygiene of the sensitive area.

What to Look for in the Composition

• Adjusted pH: values around 4.5 to 5.5 for daily external care.
• Soap-free: mild surfactants that cleanse without pulling the skin.
• Lactic acid: helps maintain the normal acidic environment.
• Prebiotics or probiotic strains: support the balance of normal flora.
• Soothing extracts: chamomile, calendula, aloe vera, D-panthenol for a sense of relief.
• Without fragrance and colorants: a key criterion if your skin reacts easily.
• Without parabens and alcohol: less chance of stinging in an irritated area.

Series Most Frequently Requested by Customers

The Pharmasept Tol Velvet Hygienic is the most popular choice for mild, daily cleansing in a large economical package. The Apivita Intimate Care has daily and more refreshing versions with herbal extracts and prebiotics. From Intermed Eva Intima you will find both the cleansing liquids of the Wash series and the Douche versions with chamomile or baking soda, which are aimed at more specific needs and discussed first with the pharmacist. The Frezyderm Intim Area is the reference choice for skin prone to irritation.

Proper Technique and Common Mistakes

Wash only externally, with your fingers and not with a sponge, and rinse thoroughly. Dry with gentle pats, always from front to back. Avoid two or three washes a day, deodorant sprays and scented wipes as a permanent solution. Prefer cotton underwear and change wet swimsuits quickly. No infection, such as candidiasis, bacterial vaginitis or urinary tract infection, is treated with a cleansing product: if you experience intense itching, a change in smell or discharge, burning urination or pain, you need a gynecologist’s assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use body wash there too?

Better not on a daily basis. Common body washes have a more alkaline pH and fragrances that in many women cause dryness and stinging.

How often should I wash during my period?

Once or twice a day with mild liquid is enough. Changing sanitary pads or tampons at the right time matters more than extra washing.

Does the cleansing product protect against fungi?

It does not have such a role. It helps maintain a balanced environment, but does not prevent or treat infection. For recurrent episodes, consult a doctor.

Are they suitable in pregnancy?

Mild liquids without fragrance usually are, but ask your pharmacist or gynecologist, especially if you have been prescribed any treatment.

Do you need a different product after menopause?

Often yes, because the mucous membrane becomes drier. Many women combine a very mild liquid with a moisturizing gel. See also the section on menopause.
