Sensitive Area Hygiene

Intimate Hygiene: Why Soap Isn't Enough

The area of the vulva and vagina has its own balance. The normal pH of the external area is more acidic than the rest of the skin, while the vagina is dominated by lactobacilli that maintain this environment. A common soap with an alkaline pH and fragrances disrupts this balance and is often the cause of discomfort that leads some to the pharmacy.

The second misconception is that the more the area is washed, the healthier it remains. The opposite is true. Excessive washing, unnecessary vaginal washes and scented wipes remove the protective flora. The vagina cleans itself, care mainly concerns the external area.

Where Each Subcategory Applies

Daily Care

Cleansing is the starting point for all: cleansing wipes with balanced pH, without soap, for one to two uses per day. You can also find the mildest versions for sensitive periods, after hair removal or on hot days with heavy sweating.

Dryness and Discomfort

Vaginal moisturizing addresses the feeling of dryness, tingling or difficulty in contact, one of the most common and least discussed issues. Vaginal gels offer immediate relief and lubrication, with formulas containing hyaluronic acid or lactic acid. Vaginal suppositories are chosen when longer-lasting action is needed during the night or to support the natural flora after an anti-biotic, and it is appropriate to discuss these with the pharmacist or gynecologist.

Period

In tampons and pads you will find the absorbent options, from daily use pads to overnight pads, as well as cotton versions for easily irritated skin. Period pains gather solutions for relief from cramps, from heating pads to formulations prescribed by a pharmacist.

Life Stage Changes

Menopause is a normal stage, not a disease. The drop in estrogens is often accompanied by hot flashes, sleep disturbances and mucous membrane dryness. The products in this section aim to relieve the feeling of discomfort and maintain daily comfort, while hormonal or other treatment is decided exclusively by a gynecologist.

Control and Personal Life

The diagnostic tests include pregnancy and ovulation tests for home use. They provide an initial indication and not a diagnosis: any positive or doubtful result is confirmed with a laboratory test. The pleasure devices are a category of personal wellness, with materials suitable for skin contact and the need for careful cleaning before and after use.

What to Look for on the Label

• pH: values around 5 for daily external area, milder alkaline versions only on recommendation.
• Lactic Acid: helps maintain the normal acidic environment.
• Probiotics and Prebiotics: support the balance of the natural flora.
• Hyaluronic Acid: reduces the feeling of dryness in mucous membranes.
• Without Fragrances and Dyes: a key criterion for sensitive skin.
• Soothing Extracts: chamomile and aloe for a feeling of relief after hair removal.

Brands Trusted by Customers

The Intermed Eva Intima line is the most complete in the category, with cleansing wipes, moisturizing gels and vaginal suppositories for different needs. Apivita Intimate Care offers daily and more intensive versions with herbal extracts, while Pharmasept Tol Velvet Hygienic is popular for mild cleaning in a large pack. The Uriach Colpofix line targets more targeted support of the vaginal mucosa with aplikater application.

Good Practices in Daily Life

Wash once a day with lukewarm water and a small amount of a special cleanser, only externally, and dry with gentle pats. Prefer cotton underwear and avoid very tight clothing for many hours. Change pads or tampons every four to six hours. After swimming, change the wet swimsuit. If you are waxing the bikini line, see the milder methods in body depilation. Consult a doctor if you experience intense itching, a change in the smell or color of discharge, burning during urination or pain, especially if they recur.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to use vaginal washes?

In general, no. Washes are only recommended by a gynecologist for a specific reason and for a limited time, because otherwise they remove the natural flora.

Can I use the same liquid all month?

Yes, as long as it suits you. Many women prefer a milder version for the rest of the days and a more refreshing one during their period.

How reliable is a home pregnancy test?

It is quite reliable when done with morning urine and after the day the period was expected. A very early test may give a negative result while there is actually a pregnancy.

Is dryness in menopause solved only with hormones?

Not necessarily. Many women find relief with moisturizing vaginal gels and lubricants. The choice, however, and the exclusion of other causes are always made by the gynecologist.

Is a slight smell normal?

Yes, the area has its own distinctive smell that changes within the cycle. A sudden, strong or unpleasant change is a reason to see a doctor, not to buy a scented product.
