Biotin

Biotin (also known as vitamin H) is a water-soluble B-complex vitamin, known for its role in hair, skin, and nail health.

The role of biotin in the body

Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, the maintenance of normal skin, normal macronutrient metabolism (proteins, carbohydrates, fats), normal nervous system function, normal psychological function, and normal energy metabolism. These are the approved health claims for biotin under Regulation (EC) 1924/2006.

Biotin and keratin

Biotin is involved in biochemical processes related to the production of keratin, the basic protein that structures hair and nails. This product is not intended for the prevention, treatment, or therapy of hair loss or any other condition; biotin deficiency is rare in individuals with a normal diet.

Sources of biotin in the diet

Eggs, nuts, legumes, and whole grains are good sources of biotin. Biotin-rich foods retain their nutritional value better when consumed raw or lightly cooked.

When might you need a supplement

Biotin deficiency is rare in the general population. It may be associated with symptoms such as fatigue or skin problems, however diagnosis of any deficiency always requires medical evaluation. Persistent hair loss requires assessment by a doctor or dermatologist for the actual causative factor.

Important clarification

Biotin in high doses can affect certain blood laboratory tests (e.g., thyroid tests). Inform your doctor if you are taking a biotin supplement before blood tests.

Forms of biotin supplements

Available in capsules, tablets, and as an ingredient in hair-skin-nail formulations or multivitamin combinations.
