Sensitive Skin: When Skin Reacts to Everything It Touches

We call skin sensitive when it reacts disproportionately to stimuli that the majority can tolerate without problem: a change in temperature, tap water, a fragrance, a new cream. The reaction manifests as tingling, burning, stinging, pulling or transient redness, often without visible damage. At its root is a skin barrier that isn't doing its job well, allowing irritants to pass through more easily and moisture to escape.

There's a distinction that confuses many. Sensitivity is not an allergy. An allergic reaction involves a specific allergen and activates an immune response, whereas sensitivity is a matter of tolerance that changes with time, stress, cycle and season. The same person may tolerate a product perfectly in November and react to it in March.

How to Choose Safely

Fewer Ingredients, Better

High tolerance formulas deliberately limit ingredients. The shorter the INCI list, the fewer potential triggers. Look for indications of sterile or airtight packaging, which allows preservative-free formulations.

Fragrance-free and Alcohol-free

These are the two most common causes of tingling. The term fragrance-free is not the same as unscented, which sometimes means that a fragrance has been added to mask the base smell.

According to Co-existing Conditions

If sensitivity is accompanied by persistent redness or visible veins, see the suggestions in the rosacea and red vein disorders category. If pulling and dryness predominate, the sensitive and irritated skin section is useful.

Helping Ingredients

• Thermal water, with a soothing character and good tolerance.
• Panthenol and allantoin, which provide a sense of comfort to irritated skin.
• Ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids, which help maintain the barrier.
• Niacinamide in low concentration, mild and well tolerated.
• Prebiotics and postbiotics, for balancing the skin microbiome.
• Glycerin and squalane, simple and consistent moisturizers without fragrance.

Popular Choices

The La Roche-Posay Toleriane is the most sought-after name in the category, with the Toleriane Dermallergo line aimed at the most demanding skins. The Avène Tolerance Control and Avène Tolerance Hydra-10 work with minimal ingredients, while the URIAGE Tolederm and URIAGE Cica cover soothing and repairing needs. The MEY Calmosin is a classic pharmacy choice, the Darphin Intral caters to a more premium audience and the Avène Cicalfate+ supports the skin after invasive procedures.

Practical, in Daily Life

Keep the routine short: cleansing, moisturizing, sunscreen. Each new product is tested alone, for five days, on a small area inside the arm or behind the ear. Wash with lukewarm water and prefer formulas without foam or with minimal foam from the face cleansing category. Avoid scrubs with granules, cleansing brushes and very hot showers. Sunscreen is also essential here: formulations with mineral filters from the face sunscreens are usually better tolerated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does tingling mean the product is working?

No. It means the skin is irritated. A brief tingling with vitamin C or acids is tolerable, but persistent burning is not.

Can I ever use retinol?

Many sensitive skins tolerate mild forms once a week, always over a moisturizer layer. Discuss first with your pharmacist.

Why do I suddenly react to a product I've used for years?

The tolerance threshold changes. A period of intense stress, a climate change or a phase with many new cosmetics can temporarily lower it.

Is natural safer?

Not necessarily. Many essential oils and plant extracts are among the most common irritants. The criterion is the composition, not the origin.
