Hand Care

Hand Care: Why Hands Reveal Age Before the Face

The skin on the back of the hand is one of the thinnest in the body, with minimal subcutaneous fat and far fewer sebaceous glands than the face. This means it loses water faster, lacks the lipid layer that would protect it, and shows signs of relaxation, fine lines, and discoloration earlier. On top of that, consider what hands do every day: water, dishwashing detergents, antiseptics, cold, sun on the steering wheel of a car.

The most common misconception is that cracked hands are a seasonal issue and will pass on their own in May. In reality, the main factor is not the cold but the frequency of washing: each wash removes lipids from the skin barrier, and if they are not replenished, dryness becomes a permanent condition. The second major gap is sunscreen. Most people apply it to their face and stop at the wrist, while brown spots on the back of the hand are almost exclusively the result of cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

What Your Hands Need

Cleansing That Doesn't Dry Out

If you wash your hands dozens of times a day, the first step is not the cream but the cleansing product itself. Mild hand soaps with gentle surfactants and neutral pH cleanse just as well without stripping the lipid layer.

Daily Hydration

For skin that just feels pulled after washing, a light texture that absorbs quickly is sufficient. The hand moisturizing creams are the go-to for the bag and the office.

Cracks and Irritation

When cracks appear on the fingers, redness or itching, a thicker formula with occlusives is needed. These are the repair creams, which aim to restore comfort.

Spots and Discolorations

For sun-induced brown spots, there are formulations that combine photoprotection with brightening ingredients, in the creams for freckles.

Ingredients That Make the Difference

• Glycerin and hyaluronic acid: draw water into the upper layers and immediately reduce the sensation of dryness.
• Urea 5%: hydrates and softens hardened skin, especially on the palms.
• Ceramides and niacinamide: support the skin barrier when it has been distressed.
• Panthenol and allantoin: soothe and provide a sense of relief.
• Shea butter, beeswax, lanolin: lock in moisture, ideal for nighttime.
• Sunscreen filters from SPF 15 and above: the most essential factor in the appearance of spots over the years.

Most Frequently Requested Brands

In dermatocosmetics, the most popular are La Roche-Posay Cicaplast and URIAGE Bariederm for distressed hands, Avène Cold Cream and Bioderma Atoderm for very dry, sensitive skin, as well as CeraVe Moisturising with ceramides. Among Greek options, the Apivita Hand Cream with honey and propolis and the Korres Pure Greek Olive have a steady following, as does the Frezyderm Dermofilia. For classic, economical daily use, the popular choices remain Neutrogena Norwegian Formula and Cera di Cupra with beeswax.

Routine That Works in Practice

The rule is simple: cream after every wash, not just once a day. A small tube by the sink and one in the bag make more of a difference than an expensive cream that stays on the bedside table. In the evening, apply a generous amount of a rich formula and, if the hands are very cracked, wear cotton gloves for sleep. When washing dishes and using cleaners, use gloves, with a thin cotton one inside if you sweat. Finally, don't forget sunscreen on the back of the hand during months of intense sunshine, especially if you drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my hands crack while I'm applying cream?

Usually because the cream is too light for the degree of dryness or because it's applied once a day while the hands are washed ten times. Try a thicker formula at night and a lighter one during the day.

Does the antiseptic gel cause dryness?

Alcohol evaporates and carries away moisture, so yes, it contributes. Prefer types with glycerin and apply cream immediately once hands are dry.

Do I need a different cream for winter and summer?

Needs change. In winter, rich textures with fatty ingredients help, while in summer a light moisturizer with a protection index covers better.

When should I see a dermatologist?

When there are persistent cracks that bleed, blisters, severe itching or deterioration extending to the nails. These require a diagnosis, not a cosmetic product.
