Vaginal Moisturization

Vaginal Dryness: More Common Than Discussed

The sensation of dryness in the vagina does not only concern women after menopause. It appears during breastfeeding and the first months after childbirth, during periods of intense stress, with certain treatments such as antihistamines or antidepressants, after cancer treatments, but also in younger women without apparent cause. It manifests as tingling, burning sensation, discomfort with underwear or pain on contact.

The main misconception here is that lubricant and moisturizer are the same thing. They are not. The lubricant acts immediately, reduces friction at the moment you need it and its action ends with use. The vaginal moisturizer is applied on a schedule, for example every two or three days, regardless of contact, and aims to gradually improve the feeling of comfort of the mucosa. Many women need both, each for a different reason.

Lubricants: Which Base Do You Choose?

Water-based

The safe default option. Compatible with latex condoms and all materials, they are easily rinsed off and do not stain. They are absorbed relatively quickly, so you may need to repeat. Prefer formulas without fragrance, without dyes and without glycerin in high proportion, if you tend to irritation.

Silicone-based

They last longer, are not absorbed and are suitable for use in water. They are also compatible with latex. However, they do not combine with silicone products, such as some pleasure devices, because they alter their surface.

Oil-based products

Petroleum jelly, baby oil, vegetable oils and fatty body creams destroy latex and cancel the protection of the condom. Avoid them when using a condom or diaphragm, and they also cause irritation in many women.

What to Look for on the Label

Useful points are pH close to normal acidic values, isotonicity, indication of compatibility with latex and the absence of fragrances and warming or cooling additives, which easily irritate the mucosa.

Vaginal Moisturizers: How to Fit Them into Your Routine

• On a schedule: every two or three days, not just before contact.
• In the evening: application while lying down keeps the preparation longer in place.
• With patience: the feeling of comfort usually improves within two to four weeks of consistent use.
• With hyaluronic acid: one of the most common ingredients for reducing the feeling of dryness.
• With lactic acid: helps maintain the normal acidic environment.
• In single doses: a healthier option than jars, with easier single use.

Frequently Requested Series

The Intermed Eva Intima Moist is the best-known option in moisturizing gel single doses, with the Moist Long Acting version for a longer feeling of comfort. The Colpofix from Uriach is applied with an applicator and targets the support of the vaginal mucosa. The Intermed Eva Intima Restore pH aims to maintain the normal pH, while the Intermed Eva Intima Meno-Control is specifically aimed at the menopausal phase. When the Issue is Not the Lubricant

Dryness is a symptom and not a diagnosis. If it is accompanied by itching, change in smell or discharge, blood after contact, sores or intense pain, it needs examination by a gynecologist before any purchase. No lubricant or moisturizer of this category treats yeast infection, bacterial vaginitis or urinary tract infection. Seek an evaluation if the dryness appeared after starting a new treatment or if it persists despite proper use of a moisturizer for a month. At the same time, keep daily cleaning mild and see what applies to the menopause phase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which lubricant is safe with a condom?

Those with water or silicone base. Oil-based products weaken latex and can tear it, so they are never used with it.

Trying for a baby. Does the lubricant affect it?

Some formulas are not suitable in this case. There are lubricants specially marked for couples trying, so ask explicitly at the pharmacy.

Is coconut oil a good solution?

We do not recommend it. It destroys latex, does not have the appropriate pH for the mucosa and in several women causes irritation or balance disruption.

Can I use lubricant every time?

Yes, there is no reason to limit it to a good formula without fragrances. However, if you always need it in large quantities, it is worth checking the cause of the dryness.

Moisturizer or gels with applicator?

The form is a matter of comfort. The differences between the forms and their indications are described in the vaginal gels and the vaginal suppositories.
