The day that until recently belonged to the Americans, in recent years has officially made its appearance in our country too. Black Friday or otherwise Black Friday has come to Greece to stay, with more and more stores announcing promotions and discounts every year.
But what is the story behind the establishment of this holiday of big discounts?
What is Black Friday?
Black Friday is related to the celebration of Thanksgiving, one of the biggest holidays in America. Traditionally, the day after Thanksgiving, which is a Friday, is a holiday in several U.S. states, with schools and services not operating. This four-day holiday increases the number of potential shoppers, something that the commercial world decided to exploit by establishing a big holiday of discounts.
It is no coincidence that Black Friday recorded for many years the highest sales revenue of the year. And despite the fact that in recent years discounts have extended to several days of the month, images of queues of people waiting early in the morning outside big store chains and jostling to acquire consumer goods continue to make the rounds of the world.
Why Black Friday?
How can such a festive day be described as "black"? There are two official versions. The term is said to have first appeared in Philadelphia, USA, and attributed the chaos created in the streets due to traffic congestion and the crowds in the big commercial streets on this day.
The official version, however, claims that the term has roots back in the ’60s when receipts were still handwritten and stores had two ink colors, red for days of negative balance and black for days of positive balance. And because on this day the balance turned from "red" to black in just one day, the term and the reference to this day as Black Friday, i.e., Black Friday, was established.
Black Friday in Greece
In Greece, the celebration of the day was introduced in 2016 and it signals the start of the Christmas holiday period with stores announcing big promotions before the holidays, thus starting the holiday season in the best way!
