It is a transient disorder that appears in 30% of infants. It appears from the first weeks of their life and subsides after the third month.
The causes that cause the colic are not fully understood, however there are some factors that contribute to their appearance. Some of these are the overfeeding of the infant and the ingestion of air during feeding. If the baby does not pass gas, its belly collects air and swells, causing it pain.
Another reason may be that the baby's intestine is still immature for the digestion of certain components of milk. Also, the body in its attempt to expel the stool may suffer cramps.
The appearance of colic can occur throughout the day, but the pain usually becomes more acute in the afternoon from 18:00 onwards. At this time intense crying is observed, and the baby's body closes to its belly by folding the legs or arms.
