Mourounelaio: Benefits for Children
What is mourounelaio?
Mourounelaio is the oil produced from the liver of white fish (mourouna, mackerel), and it is very nutritious, while it is used to address a plethora of conditions. The main difference of it with the other fish oils lies in the fact that the "oil" extracted does not come from the flesh (tissue) of fatty fish, but as mentioned before, from the liver. Despite its strong and perhaps unpleasant for many taste, mourounelaio is considered an excellent food, as it contributes to the prevention of many diseases. It is rich in calories and is an excellent source of dietary fats and nutrients. Mourounelaio is popular in many countries of Northern Europe as a natural remedy!
What are the benefits of mourounelaio for children?
A child's diet should be rich in all those components that promote health and proper development. It should be rich in vitamins, trace elements, minerals and healthy fats (such as unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids). Mourounelaio thanks to its valuable components, is certainly one of those foods that can support the development of the child, and can be administered even from the first year of the child's life. It is an excellent source of the following components:
1. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for many functions of the human body which we get as we eat fatty fish (sardines, tuna, salmon etc.), shellfish, some vegetable oils and various seeds. They contribute to muscle function, blood clotting, digestion, cell division and the overall development of children and infants. Omega-3 fatty acids contain DHA, which is an essential structural component for brain health and cognitive function.
2. It is an important source of vitamin D. This vitamin supports bone and tooth health, positively affects the immune system, neuromuscular and cardiovascular function, regulates cell growth and protects lung health. More and more studies show that it is of great importance for infants and children, as maintaining normal levels can contribute to the prevention of many diseases, such as rickets, various respiratory infections, allergies, asthma, psoriasis, diabetes (type I & II), hypertension, obesity and dyslipidemia. Vitamin D also promotes the strengthening of the immune system and bones.
3. It contains vitamin A. This is an important and essential vitamin for the healthy development of the child. It enhances eye health, vision development and helps protect the body from infections. Vitamin A also promotes the health and development of cells and tissues in the body.
4. Mourounelaio also contains the important vitamin K, which contributes to blood clotting. Vitamin K facilitates the absorption of metal elements and provides elasticity to the blood vessels, offering cardiovascular protection and reducing blood pressure. Moreover, the intake of vitamin K from children and infants is essential, as it also contributes to good memory and hair strengthening. The lack of it in infants can create problems such as internal or external bleeding, problems in the intestinal system or in the bones.
At what age can I give mourounelaio to my child?
It is important to always consult the specialist who is monitoring the child and to act based on his or her specific needs. Most suggest that from the moment the child starts consuming fish, you can start giving them mourounelaio as well. Some specialists even suggest superficial application on the skin of infants with mourounelaio before they start eating, as they believe that even this practice can be beneficial. It should be noted that, although mourounelaio may have an exceptionally beneficial nutritional value, each child is different and we must act based on their own needs and deficiencies.
