Solgar Cellular Energy: Niagen and vitamins for energy metabolism

The Solgar Cellular Energy is a dietary supplement in phytocapsules. Each phytocapsule contains 300mg Niagen, i.e. chlorinated ribosylnicotinamide, together with 126mg NE vitamin B3, 45mg vitamin C and a B vitamin complex including thiamine, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, biotin and vitamin B12. The package contains 28 phytocapsules and is suitable for vegans.

It is aimed at adults with intense mental or physical activity, people who feel fatigue and exhaustion during the day, and those who want a daily dose of B complex in one capsule only.

How is energy produced within the cell and what is the role of B vitamins?

The energy used by the body does not come directly from food. Carbohydrates, fats and proteins are broken down into smaller molecules and through a series of reactions are converted into ATP, the energy currency of the cell. In this whole chain, enzymes do not work alone. They need cofactors, most of which come from B vitamins.

Thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, biotin and vitamin B12 all contribute to normal energy metabolism. Most of them also contribute to the reduction of fatigue and exhaustion, while vitamin C adds its contribution to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.* Because B vitamins are water-soluble, the body does not store them to a large extent and daily intake is important.

How Solgar positions the product

According to the product presentation by Solgar, the formula is described as follows:

  • Specially designed formula with Niagen. Solgar refers to the standardized raw material Niagen, i.e. nicotinamide riboside.
  • Helps in the production of cellular energy. This is a formulation of the producer, referring to the role of the coenzyme NAD.
  • Niagen is a precursor of the coenzyme NAD. The reference is to the biochemical relationship of the two molecules.
  • Normal function of metabolic processes aimed at energy production. This corresponds to the approved claim of normal energy metabolism.*
  • Reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Approved claim, attributed to vitamins B2, B3, B6, B12, pantothenic acid and vitamin C.*
  • Vitamin C contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. This is an approved claim.*

The above formulations are attributed to the producer. The references to cellular energy and NAD associated specifically with nicotinamide riboside do not have an approved health claim by EFSA and remain the subject of research. The claims for energy metabolism, reduction of fatigue and oxidative stress are approved and attributed to the vitamins in the composition.

Ingredients one by one

  • Riboflavin, vitamin B2, 0.5mg, 36% DRI. Contributes to normal energy metabolism, maintenance of the normal condition of red blood cells, skin and vision, protection of cells from oxidative stress and reduction of fatigue and exhaustion.*
  • Pantothenic acid, vitamin B5, 1.2mg, 20% DRI. Contributes to normal energy metabolism, normal mental performance and reduction of fatigue and exhaustion.*
  • Vitamin B6, 0.6mg, 43% DRI. Contributes to normal energy metabolism, normal function of the nervous system, normal psychological function and regulation of hormonal activity.*
  • Biotin, 8mcg, 16% DRI. Contributes to normal energy metabolism, normal metabolism of macronutrients and maintenance of the normal condition of hair and skin.*
  • Vitamin B12, 1.8mcg, 72% DRI. Contributes to normal energy metabolism, normal red blood cell formation, normal function of the nervous system and reduction of fatigue and exhaustion.*
  • Niagen, chlorinated ribosylnicotinamide, 300mg. It is a form of vitamin B3 and a precursor of the coenzyme NAD. It is the subject of extensive research, without an approved health claim.**

Who is it suitable for?

It suits adults with a demanding schedule, combining many hours of work with physical activity and feeling tired at the end of the day. It suits people who follow a vegan diet and want to cover vitamin B12, which is not found in plant foods. It is an option for those who prefer one capsule a day instead of many separate formulations, as well as for those who follow the research around NAD precursors and want a standardized raw material.

The product is a dietary supplement and does not replace a medical diagnosis or medication. It is intended only for adults.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is Niagen?

It is the standardized form of nicotinamide riboside, a form of vitamin B3 that acts as a precursor of the coenzyme NAD. The capsule contains 300mg.

Why does vitamin B3 reach 788% of the daily reference intake?

Because niacin is provided both by Niagen and by niacin in the formula. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.

When during the day should I take it?

Preferably with a meal. Many prefer it in the morning, with breakfast.

How long does the pack last?

With one capsule a day, the 28 phytocapsules last for 28 days.

Does it increase NAD in cells?

There is no approved health claim for this. Nicotinamide riboside is a precursor of NAD and is the subject of research.**

Is it suitable for vegans?

Yes. The capsule shell is of plant origin and vitamin B12 is of particular importance for a vegan diet.

Can a teenager take it?

No. The product is intended only for adults.

How does it differ from a simple B complex vitamin?

In that it combines the B complex and vitamin C with 300mg of standardized nicotinamide riboside, a component not found in classic B complexes.

* Health claims approved under Regulation (EC) 1924/2006. The product is not intended for the prevention, treatment or diagnosis of a human disease.
** Nicotinamide riboside does not have an approved health claim by EFSA under Regulation (EC) 1924/2006. The claims for its benefits are attributed to the producer.
