Respiratory symptoms related to bronchial asthma, bronchitis or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease are usually treated with the prescription of aerosol medications administered through metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs) or “puffers”. A metered-dose inhaler contains the medication and the propellant that carries the medication to the lungs. Aerosol therapies are effective because they act quickly and with minimal side effects.
However, because typical metered-dose inhalers release a dose at a speed of over 100 km/h [Newman, 1983], effective delivery of the medication to the lungs can be difficult. To be effective, the device must be pressed during inhalation so that the medication can reach the deeper part of the lungs. Without this coordination, the benefit of taking the medication is minimized, as part of the medication is trapped in the mouth or throat and absorbed into the bloodstream.
