Its main ingredient is glycerol, which has two main characteristics regarding its use in ear drops, its oily consistency, due to which it adheres gently to the skin at the application site and is responsible for its protective properties, and its hygroscopicity, due to which when administered topically it removes water from the edematous tissues (osmotic action) resulting in the reduction of edema and relief from pain.
Also, lidocaine is used as a surface anesthetic, which enhances the action and relieves pain in the ear.
