Homocysteine is an amino acid, produced during the metabolism of another, methionine, which is ingested through protein-rich foods. Its levels in the blood are an indicator of heart health, as high levels are a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension and cholesterol. Factors that adversely affect homocysteine levels are reduced intake of folic acid through diet and lack of vitamin B6 & vitamin B12.
