Vitamin D is naturally produced by the body when we are exposed to sunlight and specifically to UVB rays for 30 minutes daily during midday hours. Factors such as skin melanin, use of sunscreens, air pollution, and the ozone hole negatively affect the formation of vitamin D in the skin. Additionally, from the age of 60 onwards, the body's ability to produce sufficient amounts of vitamin D gradually decreases.
According to scientific studies in the Greek population, a deficiency of vitamin D was found:
In 1 in 5 Greeks
In 57.7% of the population throughout the year
In 47% during the winter months
In 91.3% of newborns born in winter
Low levels of vitamin D are associated with worsening osteoporosis, bone pain, muscle weakness, and an increased risk of falls and fractures (especially in the elderly).
A characteristic symptom of vitamin D deficiency is frequent colds and upper respiratory tract inflammations.
