Intermed OptoFresh Probio Relief are eye drops in a 8ml vial. It is a protective solution for the eye surface, with a phospholipid blend from bacterial lysate of Lactobacillus sakei at a concentration of 4% and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (hypromellose) 0.3%. It does not contain preservatives and the manufacturer states that it is suitable for contact lens wearers as well.
The manufacturer presents it as the first probiotic eye surface solution in Greece. It offers hydration and lubrication, and supports the eye microbiome.
The eye surface is covered by the tear film, a thin layer with three parts: the outer lipid layer, the aqueous part and the mucous layer that holds it to the cornea. The phospholipids are located at the boundary between the lipid and aqueous parts and help the film to spread evenly. When the film becomes unstable, it evaporates faster and the eye feels dry and tired.
The lysate of L. sakei is inactivated material from a probiotic strain, not live bacteria. The phospholipids derived from it, according to the manufacturer, stabilize and restore the tear film. Hypromellose is a known lubricant component of artificial tears, which increases the viscosity of the drop to stay longer on the eye.
The solution is preservative-free, which is important for those who use drops several times a day for a long period.
Eye surface disease due to dysfunction of meibomian glands, dry eye, prolonged screen use, contact lens use, menopause, smoking or environmental pollution. Also, in conjunctivitis, blepharitis, blepharoconjunctivitis and cataract, as well as before and after eye surgeries.
