The hardness of a toothbrush depends on the thickness and number of fibers. Fewer, slightly thicker fibers bend less, so the brush provides greater resistance on the tooth surface. This is liked by many, but requires a light hand: medium in combination with strong pressure is not a good idea.
A simple check: if the fibers of your old toothbrush opened up very quickly, you probably press too hard. Then soft may be a better option, regardless of preference.
