Curcumin and saffron are two commonly used spices that have been increasingly investigated for their action against symptoms of depression.
Saffron is characterized by its bioactive components, crocins and safranal, which are responsible for the spice's aroma and characteristic red color. There is evidence that crocins act as inhibitors of dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake, while safranal mainly acts on serotonin reuptake.
