Selenium, as a key component of glutathione peroxidase, is an important and powerful antioxidant. Selenium is incorporated into proteins and creates the selenoproteins, which are important antioxidant enzymes. The antioxidant properties of selenoproteins help prevent the destruction of cells and cellular structures by free radicals. Other selenoproteins help in the proper functioning and regulation of the thyroid gland and play an important role in the immune system, DNA repair, and detoxification from heavy metals. High doses of vitamin C (above 1 gram) can enhance the absorption of selenium. This metal is therefore best taken in combination with antioxidants, such as vitamins C or E. This particular preparation provides the best form of selenium on the market, since vitamin E has been added to it, which works in synergy with selenium.
