Astragalus (Huang Qi) is a plant known for its tonic action that has thrived in China for over 2,000 years. Some of the known active ingredients of Astragalus root are flavonoids, free amino acids, trace elements, and polyphenols, as well as glycosides, polysaccharides, choline, and beta-sitosterol.
The Astragalus herb is highly valued by the traditional medical system of Eastern and Southern Asia for its adaptogenic properties, such as increasing the body's resistance to physical, mental, and emotional stress, as well as for its ability to enhance the "vital energy of the body" known as Qi («chi»).
The primary use of Astragalus lies in its tonic action, which seems to contribute to the enhancement of metabolism. Nowadays, it is mainly used to maintain a healthy immune response. Non-clinical studies indicate the ability of Astragalus root to stimulate the production and normal activity of specialized white blood cells, such as T-cells and Natural Killer Cells.
