Borage oil is a nutritious oil, rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as linoleic acid and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which the body converts into an anti-inflammatory eicosanoid hormone, called prostaglandin E1 (PGE1).

However, many factors interfere with the conversion of gamma-linolenic acid into eicosanoid hormones, such as chronic diseases, aging, saturated fats, hydrogenated oils, blood sugar problems, as well as insufficient amounts of vitamin C, magnesium, zinc and B vitamins.

The medical applications of borage oil include rheumatoid arthritis, atopic dermatitis (eczema), psoriasis, infantile seborrheic dermatitis, osteoporosis (in combination with fish oil), fibrocystic mastopathy, Raynaud's disease and Sjogren's syndrome, scleroderma, atherosclerosis, deficient care syndrome, multiple sclerosis, irritable bowel syndrome, tardive dyskinesia, and intermittent claudication.

Prostaglandin E1 has vasodilatory properties and is used to treat symptoms of mild to moderate erectile dysfunction. Research studies have shown that gamma-linolenic acid can be used to treat common symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and male impotence.

Warning: Borage Oil is not recommended for people taking antihypertensive or phosphodiesterase inhibitors.
