Cascara Sagrada in Spanish means "holy bark". It is an herb derived from the bark of the American buckthorn tree, which has been used by Native Americans for a long time.
The powder made from this bark acts as a powerful laxative and is believed to strengthen the walls of the colon. Cascara Sagrada consists of compounds called anthroquinones.
It is these anthroquinones that act as a laxative in humans because they cause peristalsis, which is the scientific term for causing contractions in the intestines and the large intestine. These contractions give the push to activate the intestines. Cascara Sagrada also contains Emodin and aloe-emodin, which cover and strengthen the walls of the digestive system, as well as some other harmless ingredients that do not have a laxative effect.
Other notable components of cascara sagrada are the hydroxyanthraquinone glycosides called cascarosides (A, B, C and D which represent about 70% of the total glycosides in small concentrations) and they exhibit laxative effects. Some other important components include resins, tannins and lipids, which make up the majority of the other components of the bark. Along with these properties, cascara is also thought to improve the tone of the muscle walls of the colon. This herb also stimulates the secretion of metals and releases liquid lubricants in the large intestine. These liquids soothe and strengthen the walls of the intestine as well as slow down the absorption of vitamins and minerals into the bloodstream.
