Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is the source of many naturally occurring compounds such as carotenoids, flavonoids, and phytosterols, which act as antioxidant agents.

Its root and leaves have a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine.

Indigenous populations in America use Dandelion to address nephropathy, dyspepsia, and heartburn. Traditional Arab medicine recommends Dandelion for liver disease, and traditional Chinese medicine uses it in combination with other drugs to treat hepatitis and upper respiratory tract infections, including bronchitis and pneumonia.

Today, the medicinal properties of the root and leaves are widely known and accepted throughout Europe. The European Scientific Cooperative for Phytotherapy recommends Dandelion root for dyspepsia and loss of appetite, and in Germany, the group of experts known as Commission E recommends products containing Dandelion for the treatment of liver disorders, loss of appetite, dyspepsia, and fluid retention.

Note:Dandelion is generally considered safe, but some people report allergic or asthmatic reactions to this herb. Those allergic to chamomile, chrysanthemum, sunflower, or daisies may also be allergic to Dandelion. Dandelion is not recommended for patients with gallbladder disease due to the belief that it stimulates bile secretion, although there are no studies in humans or animals that scientifically confirm this.
