Citrulline is a non-essential amino acid and a precursor of arginine. As a precursor, citrulline provides a readily available substance for the production of arginine, helping the body to maintain healthy arginine levels.
Citrulline is used by the body to remove ammonia from the muscles and store it in liver cells, until it is converted into urea and eliminated by the kidneys. In the kidneys, citrulline is converted into arginine, an amino acid rich in nitrogen and an important factor in the release of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide causes vasodilation and thus better blood flow to muscle tissue.
Citrulline helps in the production of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a simple molecule produced mainly by the sensitive inner lining of the arteries, the endothelium, and its main function is to dilate arteries and veins, thereby regulating blood flow and blood pressure.
Citrulline is thought to help in addressing symptoms of mild to moderate erectile dysfunction. Research has shown that although supplemental citrulline cannot replace phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors used in severe cases of erectile dysfunction, it has the comparative advantage of being safe and psychologically well tolerated by patients.
Citrulline promotes the healing of wounds and the maintenance of a strong immune system.
