Red Yeast Rice is a natural product used according to the traditional medical practices of Asian regions. It is produced by fermenting red rice yeast (Monascus purpureus) in white rice, and is usually taken to strengthen the body, enhance digestion, and rejuvenate the blood. It contains several compounds, known as monacolins, which inhibit cholesterol synthesis. One of these,'monacolin K', is a powerful inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase and is also called mevinolin or lovastatin.
HMG-CoA reductase is a polytopic, transmembrane protein that catalyzes a key step in the mevalonate pathway and is involved in the synthesis of sterols, isoprenoids, and other lipids. In humans, HMG-CoA reductase acts as a regulator of the rate of cholesterol synthesis. Red Yeast Rice blocks the HMG-CoA reductase that the body needs to synthesize cholesterol, and reduces the level of cholesterol in the blood.
NOW's Red Omega contains Red Yeast Rice, which is carefully produced to avoid the presence of citrinin, a toxic byproduct of the fermentation process. This product is further enhanced by the addition of coenzyme Q10 and Omega-3 fish oil, for complete support of normal cardiovascular function.
Warning: Red Omega is not recommended for people taking statins or who have statin intolerance and/or show liver disease. It is recommended to stop use if muscle discomfort occurs. Do not use this product if you are trying to conceive, as its use may be dangerous for the fetus.
