The stinging nettle (Nettle Root) has been traditionally used since the time of Caesar, almost 2000 years ago. NOW® Nettle Root is concentrated and standardized to the highest European standards.Nettle supports healthy histamine response, healthy immune function, prostate function, inflammatory response, and helps the body to eliminate excess fluids. It is an alkalizing herb that is rich in minerals, mainly iron, and is also a source of carotenoids and vitamin C. The nettle extract contains certain substances, including phenolics and flavonoids, such as caffeic acid, malic acid, polysaccharides, and possibly many other compounds, including lectins, lignans, and phytosterols.
Nettle Root may affect hormone and protein levels in the blood that carry sexual hormones (such as testosterone and estrogen). A study showed that the combination of nettle with saw palmetto was as good as finasteride (Proscar) in reducing symptoms of prostate hyperplasia. Also as a hemostatic (to control bleeding and blood flow) it has been used to treat anemia, uterine bleeding, excessive menstruation, and hemorrhoids.Nettle shows in vitro inhibition of various key inflammatory events that cause seasonal allergy symptoms.
These include the competitive and negative agonistic action against Histamine-1 (H (1)) and the inhibition of mast cells (mast cell tryptase), preventing degranulation and the release of a multitude of pro-inflammatory mediators that cause the symptoms of allergic rhinitis.
