The Graviola (Annona muricata) is a small evergreen tree, 5-6m in height, that grows in the Amazon rainforest and other tropical parts of America. It has large dark green glossy leaves and its edible fruits are heart-shaped, 15-23cm in diameter and yellow-green on the outside and white inside (flesh). Important active ingredients have been found in all parts of the plant, including the leaves, bark, root, stem, and fruits.
It is a rich source of powerful antioxidants called annonaceous acetogenins. These antioxidants are found in high concentrations in the leaves and fruits of the plant and can significantly strengthen the immune system. Some studies have shown that the bark and leaves of Graviola also have antimicrobial, antihypertensive, antispasmodic, and vasodilatory properties.
