Urinary tract infections are among the most common infections worldwide, with the most frequent being the microbial infection of the bladder (cystitis). Urinary tract infections and their recurrences are particularly common in women, especially after menopause. Half of the female population will experience at least one episode of urinary tract infection during their lifetime, with 20-40% experiencing recurrences.
In recent years, new adjunctive approaches have been widely investigated regarding the prevention and treatment of urinary infections. Among these, D-mannose has been particularly studied due to its properties and safety profile.
D-mannose is a natural monosaccharide produced in small quantities by the human organism and is a structural component of the bladder mucosa.
Studies support the role of D-mannose in maintaining and supporting a healthy urinary tract system, through the following mechanism of action: The cell wall of E.coli has small protrusions on its surface, the lectins, which are responsible for the attachment of bacteria to the walls of the bladder, and their subsequent multiplication and development of infection. Exogenously administered D-mannose, due to its greater selectivity, binds to the lectins, inhibiting the attachment of pathogens to the walls of the bladder. It is then excreted with urination along with the bacteria.
