Body Scrubs Exfoliation

Body scrubs and body exfoliation: less rubbing, better result

The skin renews itself, but in areas of friction and during dry periods, dead cells stay on the surface. This causes a dull appearance, roughness on elbows, and the feeling that cream is not absorbed. A body scrub removes this layer and leaves the surface smooth, so that subsequent products spread evenly.

The mistake that is often heard at the pharmacy counter is overdoing it. Daily exfoliation with a coarse-grained product does not give smoother skin, it causes irritation and redness. Exfoliation is a weekly habit, not a daily one.

Mechanical or chemical exfoliation

Sugar scrub

The granules dissolve gradually with water, so the action is milder towards the end. A good choice for sensitive skin and for the first time.

Salt scrub

Sharper, angular granules with a stronger effect on knees, elbows and heels. Do not use immediately after hair removal or on scratches. A related category here are also bath salts.

Creamy peels and gloves

Fine-grained textures and fabric gloves work on dry or wet skin with minimal pressure. They help on backs and thighs.

Chemical exfoliation with acids

Emulsions with salicylic, glycolic or lactic acid smooth out without granules and are left on the skin. They are the most consistent solution for roughness and for small cystic irregularities on the arms, with gradual improvement in appearance.

Heating scrubs and tightening formulas

They combine exfoliation with massage and ingredients like caffeine or pepper. They give a sense of toning and improve texture, without changing body shape.

What to look for before choosing

• Grain size: fine-grained for sensitive skin, coarse-grained for heels and elbows.
• Oil or gel base: the oily base moisturizes at the same time, the gel base is easier to wash off.
• Percentage of acids: in chemical formulas, start with low concentrations.
• Clean ingredients without microplastics: today the granules are plant-based, from sugar, pits or coconut.
• Scent: strong for the experience, neutral if the skin is easily irritated.
• Packaging with pump or jar: the jar is good in the shower, the pump keeps the product cleaner.

Popular choices

Among Greek brands, the massage exfoliating soap and the Korres Revitalizing Body Scrub stand out, as well as the Apivita Royal Honey with sea salts. For more enjoyable textures, the Organic Shop Body Desserts and Natura Siberica series have the largest variety of scents, while the Intermed Luxurious and the Aloe+ Colors cover everyday use. For a dermatological approach, the CeraVe SA Smoothing with salicylic acid works without granules, while the Lierac Body-Nutri and the Nuxe Reve de The are the most pampering options.

How and when to do it right

Once or twice a week is enough, on skin that has softened with hot water. Work in circular motions and light pressure, one minute per area, and rinse thoroughly. Immediately afterward, apply a product from our moisturizing body creams, because the skin absorbs better at that time. Two useful rules: exfoliate the day before and not the same day as shaving or waxing, and never on sunburned or irritated skin. See also the other sections in body care.

Frequently asked questions

Does exfoliation help with trapped hairs?

It helps keep the follicle opening clean, so the hair is less likely to get trapped. Formulas with salicylic acid are usually more effective than mechanical scrubs in this regard.

Before or after tanning?

Always before, ideally a night earlier. The even surface is the main reason the color goes on without spots. See also body foundation.

Can I make scrub at home?

You can, but homemade mixtures with coarse salt are often too harsh for the body and lack preservatives. A ready-made product has a controlled grain size and a stable formula.

Is it suitable for sensitive or irritated skin?

In the phase of irritation, it is better to postpone it. When the skin calms down, start with a fine-grained or enzyme formula once a week.
