Streaks and Repair: What Are Stretch Marks Really and What Changes with Care

Streaks, or stretch marks, are not a surface damage but a change in the dermis, the deeper layer where the fibers that give skin its elasticity are located. They appear when the body changes volume quickly: in pregnancy, adolescence, in sudden weight gain or loss, in intense muscle growth. The most common areas are the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, breasts, and arms. Initially they are reddish or purple, over time they become silvery or white.

Here we need a straight talk, because the category is full of exaggerated promises. No cream and no oil can make mature, white stretch marks disappear. A cosmetic may intensely hydrate, improve their appearance so they are less visible, and help the skin remain elastic during a period of stretching. The best time to start care is before the stretch marks appear or while they are still red. For mature, white stretch marks, the discussion is about dermatological procedures, not cosmetics.

Product Forms and When Each Is Appropriate

Preventive Creams for Pregnancy

Rich, mild formulas without retinoids, for daily application on abdomen, breasts, and thighs from the second trimester. Frequency matters more than composition.

Body Oils and Dry Oils

Ideal for massage, they help the skin remain flexible and give a shine. See also the broader category body oils if you want more versatile options.

Serums and Concentrates

Thin textures with a higher concentration of actives, for targeted use on recent, reddish stretch marks.

Corrective Creams and Silicone Gels

Formulas for the appearance of marks and scars, with panthenol or silicone film that retains moisture in the area.

Daily Hydration of the Whole Body

Without a steady hydrating base, targeted products perform less effectively. This part is covered by the body moisturizers and the body dry skin.

Ingredients That Make Sense

• Dexpanthenol: soothes and improves the feeling of comfort in stretching or irritated skin.
• Shea and Cocoa Butter: rich emollients, give a supple texture and limit the feeling of dryness.
• Vitamin E and Plant Oils: antioxidants, with a good feel in massage.
• Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin: retain moisture, so the surface looks fuller and smoother.
• Peptides and Centaury Extract: classic actives in formulas for the appearance of stretch marks.
• Silicones in Film: used in products for the appearance of scars and marks.
• No Retinoids in Pregnancy: a rule not to be skipped, always check the label.

Popular Choices

For prevention during pregnancy, there is a steady demand for Lierac Phytolastil, Frezyderm Prevenstria, Mustela Maternite and Pharmasept Mama's, while Somatoline Cosmetic also has a special offer. Bio-Oil PurCellin remains the most recognizable choice in oil, with a very good cost-to-quantity ratio. The Bepanthol is the classic choice for soothing skin, the ADERMA Epitheliale and URIAGE Bariederm Cica target scar care, while the Stratamark and Weleda Mama cover the most specialized and the most natural preferences.

Practical, in Daily Use

Care works with repetition, not quantity in one application. Apply morning and evening, with a light circular massage of one to two minutes per area, on slightly damp skin after showering. Cover the entire area that stretches, not just where you already see something. In pregnancy, start early and continue through the first months postpartum. The most common mistake is stopping after two weeks: here the horizon is months. The second is sun exposure without protection, because recent streaks darken and stand out more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Stretch Marks Go Away with Cream?

No. Mature, white stretch marks do not recede with a cosmetic product. Consistent care improves their appearance and texture and hydrates the surrounding skin, so they are less visible.

When Should I Start in Pregnancy?

Most start in the second trimester, when significant stretching begins. With a history of stretch marks from adolescence, start earlier and ask your gynecologist.

Oil or Cream?

The cream hydrates, the oil limits moisture loss and facilitates massage. Cream first and oil on top covers both.

Is It Safe During Breastfeeding?

Mild formulas without retinoids and strong essential oils are usually suitable, provided they are not applied to the breast. Ask your pharmacist.

Does Anything Help Beyond Cosmetics?

Gradual weight change and adequate hydration limit abrupt skin stretching. For mature stretch marks that bother you, discuss available medical options with a dermatologist.
