Night Creams

What sets an anti-aging night cream apart

The difference isn't in the texture, it's in the composition. An evening formula doesn't need sunscreen filters, so the space they would take is given to active ingredients. It may also contain ingredients that don't mix with sun exposure, such as retinoids and exfoliating acids, and usually has less fragrance and more lipids, because it doesn't need to sit under makeup.

However, it's worth clarifying what it doesn't do. It doesn't replace serum, because the concentration of actives in a cream is typically lower. It doesn't correct a day without sunscreen. And it's not true that the oilier it is, the more effective it is. A heavy cream on skin that doesn't need it just gives a greasy feeling in the morning and nothing more.

A realistic weekly program

The biggest mistake in evening care is using all actives at the same time. Instead, work with a program. Two nights a week are dedicated to the retinoid, one night to mild chemical exfoliation, and the rest to peptides, hyaluronic acid and nourishment so the skin can rest. If everything goes well for a month, increase the retinoid to three nights. This alternation yields more than daily use of a powerful product that you'd have to abandon in two weeks due to irritation. More on the gradual introduction can be found in the retinol section.

Cream, balm or sleep mask

Classic night creams are fully absorbed and suitable for daily use. Balms and sleep masks leave a film and work best two times a week or during periods of intense dryness. There are also single-dose capsules, useful because they protect unstable ingredients like retinol from oxidation. If you wake up with tightness, your choice is likely among the suggestions for very dry skin, while if you wake up with a greasy feeling, look at the light textures for normal to combination skin.

Popular choices

The Vichy Neovadiol Magistral in its evening version is the most sought-after in the category, designed for the skin in menopause. The URIAGE Age Lift offers two directions, smoothing and exfoliating, while the Clinea Dream Away Wrinkles is the new Greek proposal with an affordable price. The L Oreal Paris Revitalift in the Filler and Laser Renew versions covers the most economical range along with the NIVEA Q10. The Darphin Predermine and the Fillerina 12 HA move in the more intensive direction, the Version Retinol Elixir targets those looking for pure retinoids, while the Apivita Bee Radiant in gel-balm form is the lightest option.

Details that change the result

Apply to completely dry skin when using retinoids, because fresh skin increases penetration and along with it irritation. Conversely, with a simple nourishing cream, slightly fresh skin helps. Prefer packages with a pump or tube for products with retinol and vitamin C, because the jar exposes them to air with each use. And don't carry over the day's amount: evening needs a bit more product, especially on the neck.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply retinol and acid the same evening?

Better not. The combination significantly increases the likelihood of irritation without corresponding benefit. Alternate them on different nights.

How long should I wait before going to bed?

Fifteen to twenty minutes are enough for most to be absorbed. If you're in a hurry, apply a smaller amount and not a richer texture.

Is night cream necessary or is my moisturizer enough?

If you're not using retinoids or acids, your moisturizer covers the basics. The separate evening formula makes sense once actives enter the routine.

I peel after two weeks. Should I stop?

First reduce the frequency to once a week and boost hydration. If the peeling is accompanied by burning and persistent redness, stop and ask your pharmacist.
