Lip Care: Why Do Your Lips Crack and What Really Helps

The lips are not just differently colored skin. Their keratin layer is much thinner than that of the rest of the face, they lack sebaceous glands and have few sweat glands. In other words, they do not produce their own protective lipid layer. Their moisture evaporates much faster than anywhere else on the face, and because they have very little melanin, they are easily affected by the sun. This anatomy, not negligence, is the main reason they crack.

The second reason is a seemingly logical habit that does the damage: licking. Saliva gives a momentary cooling sensation, but evaporates in seconds and takes moisture with it from the lip itself. It also contains digestive enzymes that irritate the thin skin. Thus the vicious cycle: I lick because they crack, they crack more because I lick. The same applies, to a lesser extent, to peeling with teeth or nails.

Which Product Format Suits You

Daily, Discreet Care

For the pocket and the office, the classic lip balm in a sticker is the most practical solution. In the lipbalm category you will find formulas with and without sunscreen index, from the most minimalist to the reparative.

Intense Dryness and Evening Restoration

When the lips are chapped or peeling, you need a thicker, more covering texture. The products in the lipbutter section have a rich buttery consistency and work perfectly as an overnight mask.

Care with a Little Color

If you want the balm to replace your lipstick, the lipstick section brings care stickers with tint and moisturizing lipsticks. For pure decorative shades, check out the lipstick makeup products, while for the beach and the mountains there are special sunblocks for lips and eyes.

What Makes a Lip Balm Work

A good formula combines two categories of ingredients. Humectants draw in moisture, and barriers lock it in. If the latter is missing, the product gives momentary relief and then the lips dry out again.

• Petroleum jelly and waxes, such as beeswax and candelilla: form the natural barrier that lips lack and limit moisture loss.
• Lanolin: one of the most effective for very chapped lips, with excellent moisture retention.
• Shea and cocoa butter: soften and give a feeling of comfort without weight.
• Glycerin and hyaluronic acid: the humectant part, always in combination with something that seals it.
• Squalane and vegetable oils: light nourishment for daily use.
• D-panthenol and madecassoside: soothe the burning sensation in irritated lips.
• Sunscreen filters: essential in summer and in the snow, where reflection is intense.

If your lips are already cracked, temporarily avoid menthol, camphor, eucalyptus, strong fragrances and mechanical exfoliation. They give a cooling sensation but perpetuate irritation.

Popular Choices

The La Roche-Posay Cicaplast is by far the most sought-after balm for cracked and distressed lips, while from the same brand the Nutritic Lips has a more nourishing character. The Apivita LipCare covers a wide range of scents with bee products and the Korres Lip Balm offers both colorless and tinted versions. The Nuxe Reve de Miel is the classic rich option for nighttime, the Avene Cold Cream and the Bioderma Atoderm cater to very sensitive lips, while the LIPOSAN and the Caudalie Vinotherapist cover daily use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it true that you get addicted to lip balm?

There is no addiction in a pharmacological sense. What happens is that some formulas, mainly those based only on humectants or containing fragrances, give short-term relief and make you reapply. A balm with barrier ingredients reduces the frequency.

Do the lips need sunscreen?

Yes, especially the lower lip that receives the most radiation. A stick with a protection index in summer or in the snow is one of the most useful habits.

Why do they crack in the corners of the mouth?

Cracks in the corners often have a different cause than simple dryness and do not resolve with a balm. If they persist, ask your pharmacist or doctor.

Should I exfoliate my lips?

Only very gently and only when there are no wounds. Most of the time, peeling goes away on its own within a few days of proper hydration.

Can I share my lip sticker?

It is best not to. Lip products come into direct contact with mucous membranes and sharing is not recommended, especially if someone has active herpes labialis.
