Hand Care

Care for Extremities: The Most Effective Areas

Hands, feet and nails are exposed to things that the face is not. Water and detergents, pressure from shoes, cold without gloves, acetone and polishes. The skin there has a different structure: on the palms and soles the keratin layer is multiple times thicker and there are no sebaceous glands, so natural lubrication is almost nonexistent. This explains why a common body lotion often falls short.

A useful remedy: cracks in the heels are not a matter of cleanliness. They are a problem of hardened, dehydrated keratinized skin that loses its elasticity and cracks under pressure. Rubbing with polish without parallel hydration usually worsens the cycle, because the skin responds by producing even more callus.

Where to Go Depending on the Area

Feet

Foot care is the right choice when the issue is dry or cracked heels, calluses, feeling of heaviness and fatigue after long hours of standing work, sweating and odor, or care for toenails. Here you find the most concentrated formulas, with higher urea content, as well as polishes, insoles and foot deodorants.

Hands

Hand care is for those who wash their hands many times a day, work with detergents or face roughness and cracks in winter. The separation here is practical: lightweight creams that absorb immediately during the day, rich formulas for the night, and versions with sun protection index for preventing spots on the back of the hand.

Nails

Nail care is for nails that break, peel or have become weak after a semi-permanent manicure, as well as for cuticles. It includes hardening bases, cuticle oils, acetone without acetone and tools. If you notice thickening, yellowing or detachment of the nail, the issue is not cosmetic and requires a dermatologist's evaluation.

Ingredients and Textures That Matter

• Urea: from 5 to 10 percent hydrates, at 20 percent and above softens hardened heels.
• Glycolic acid: helps in the gentle removal of dead cells without mechanical friction.
• Beeswax and lanolin: create a film that limits moisture loss in cracks.
• Glycerin and panthenol: the core of every hand cream, with immediate relief sensation.
• Biotin and keratin: common in strengthening formulas for brittle nails.
• Aluminum salts and talc: for managing moisture in sweaty feet.
• Unscented: priority for hands with irritation or cracks, because fragrance stings cracked skin.

Popular Choices

The Cera di Cupra with beeswax remains one of the most beloved hand creams, with a rich texture and very affordable price. The Neutrogena in the unscented version is the classic concentrated formula for very dry, distressed hands, with a small amount per use. Also look for pharmacy lines with urea for heels and cuticle oils for nails.

The Routine in Three Minutes

For hands, the cream goes on after each wash on slightly damp skin, with emphasis on joints and around the nails. In the evening, a richer layer with cotton gloves for an hour makes a noticeable difference for cracked hands. For feet, daily application of urea cream and mild polishing on dry skin once a week, not on wet skin after a bath. For nails, a cuticle oil every evening provides more than occasional intensive treatments. Give nails intervals of rest between semi-permanent manicures. It's a good idea to combine care with the rest of your body care routine, so that the extremities are not left last in line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my heels crack every summer?

Open footwear leaves the skin exposed and pressure is distributed on the periphery of the heel. The skin hardens protectively, loses moisture and cracks. Daily hydration with urea and closed shoes at home noticeably reduce the problem.

My nails break after a semi-permanent manicure. What do I do?

Give them at least three to four weeks without polish, use cuticle oil daily and keep them trimmed while they grow back. The nail fully regenerates in about six months, so improvement is gradual.

Do I need a separate cream for hands and feet?

Yes, in most cases. The concentration of urea that heels need is too high for hands, while hand cream does not have the intensity needed for a hardened sole.

Do supplements for nails help?

They can contribute to maintaining the normal condition of nails when there is a deficiency. However, they do not replace the check-up for iron, thyroid or fungal infection when the change is persistent.
