Lipstick, lipgloss and lip pencils: what changes according to the texture

The lips do not have a keratin layer with the thickness of the rest of the skin and do not have sebaceous glands. Therefore, they do not produce their own protective oily layer and lose moisture very quickly. This explains why the same lipstick can look perfect on one day and highlight every line on another. The color sits on a surface that changes from day to day, according to the weather, hydration and the habit of licking the lips.

The biggest misconception in the category is that matte dries out the lips because some ingredient damages them. This is not the case. Matte and especially liquid matte lipsticks are designed to dry into a film that does not move, so they contain volatile solvents and minimal oils. What gives duration at the same time removes the oily layer that kept the feeling of comfort. This is not a defect, it is the compromise of the category.

Which product solves which problem

I want the color to stay

The lipstick in matte or liquid matte form is what lasts the longest, especially if applied in two thin layers with a break in between.

I want shine and comfort

The lip gloss and lip stick give light and a light feeling, with shorter duration. They are suitable for everyday looks and for more mature lips, because the light fills them visually.

I want care and a little color together

The lip oil is the latest addition to the category, with an oil-based base, a transparent or slightly colored effect and a feeling of nourishment.

I want the shape to be clear

The lip pencils define the outline, prevent the color from running into the small wrinkles and also act as a base over the entire surface.

The preparation that changes the result

Before any matte product, the lips need two steps. First, gentle exfoliation, once or twice a week and not daily, with a soft toothbrush or lip scrub, to remove the peelings on which the color would stick unevenly. Then a balm, which you leave to absorb for five minutes and then wipe off the excess. If you put lipstick on a greasy surface, it will slide. See the related options in lip care. In exfoliation, we never press on cracked or injured lips, there only precedes hydration.

What lasts the longest and why

• Liquid matte lipstick, the longest duration, with the highest cost in a feeling of dryness.
• Classic matte in stick, very good duration and more comfortable texture than the liquid one.
• Satin and creamy lipstick, moderate duration, uniform coverage, comfortable feeling.
• Pencil all over the surface as a base, adds hours to anything that goes on top.
• Lip gloss, the shortest duration, easily renewed during the day.
• Lip oil, short color duration but the most caring feeling.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a shade that suits me?

Look at the natural shade of your lips and stay in the same family, cool or warm. Try the color on the lips themselves and not on the hand, because the skin of the hand has a different undertone.

My lipstick collects in the lines of the lips.

A pencil all over the surface before the lipstick helps, less product in each layer and avoiding a very oily balm underneath.

How long do lip products last after opening?

A lipstick in stick usually two years, a liquid lipstick or gloss with a squeezable tube around twelve months, because the squeezable tube returns each time to the packaging.

Can I lend my lipstick?

Better not. The lips are mucous and the infections of the area are easily transmitted through a shared product.
