History
The first references to the plant were made by Theophrastus in the 4th century BC, where it is referred to as 'Pternix', while later Dioscorides recommends 'Mega Centaurion', or 'Silybum' for the healing of wounds.
The main plant for the liver
More than 200 researches have been conducted on milk thistle, allowing the identification of three components (silybine, silychristine, silydianine) within the fruit of the plant, which form a complex (sily-marine) that protects the liver. In liver cirrhosis, silymarine enables the reconstruction of damaged cells and restores their metabolic capacity, and in the long term, it delays the progression of cirrhosis. It is also used to combat viral hepatitis and inhibit chronic hepatitis. Additionally, it stimulates the secretion of the gallbladder and thus helps in cases of liver insufficiency and gallstones. Silybum is also a natural astringent used for frequent nosebleeds and menstrual flow with heavy blood flow. Caution: as with all plants that stimulate the gallbladder, Silybum should not be used in cases of obstruction of the bile ducts.
