Plant sterols are found in vegetable oils and cereals and their consumption contributes to maintaining normal blood cholesterol levels*. The mechanism of action of plant sterols in lipid metabolism is as follows: plant sterols have a similar chemical structure to cholesterol affecting its reabsorption from the intestine. Cholesterol is normally excreted into the intestine via bile to aid digestion and is subsequently reabsorbed and enters the bloodstream. Plant sterols compete with cholesterol in its reabsorption from the intestine resulting in a reduction in its levels even in individuals on a hypolipidemic diet.
Modern diets are characterized by increasingly lower levels of dietary intake of plant sterols, for this reason many foods such as margarine are enriched with plant sterols. These enriched foods contribute to increasing daily intake. Despite this, it is difficult to achieve the desired intake, while at the same time increased consumption often leads to an increase in the calories consumed.
The Plant Sterols tablets of Lamberts provide 800mg of plant sterols and can be added to diets without increasing daily calorie intake. This dose is equivalent to the dose used in clinical studies for reducing blood cholesterol. Like all Lamberts formulations, it is manufactured in the United Kingdom according to the strict standards of Pharmaceutical GMP (Pharmaceutical GMP).
