The company Maybelline was founded in Chicago by Thomas Lyle Williams in 1915. Williams noticed that his older sister Mabel put a mixture of Vaseline and charcoal dust on her eyelashes to give them a darker, fuller look. He adapted it with a set of chemistry and produced a locally sold product called Lash-Brow-Ine. Williams renamed the beauty of the eyes Maybelline in her honor. In 1917, the company produced Maybelline Cake Mascara, "the first modern eye makeup for everyday use" and Ultra Lash, the first automatic mass market, in the 1960s.
