The Passion flower (Passiflora incarnata) or flower of passion is a native plant of North America found in the Midwestern and Southeastern states of America.
It has been traditionally used by the indigenous populations of North and South America as a herbal remedy with a calming effect.
The methanol extract of the leaves, stems, and flowers contains powerful flavonoids, sterols, oleurolic acid, volatile oil, and traces of alkaloids.
It is considered useful for the temporary relief of excessive nervousness, anxiety, overstimulation, seizures, hysteria, insomnia, asthma, spasms-related disorders, and hyperactivity syndrome.
The roots do not exhibit the above properties, while the leaves seem to contain the highest concentration of active substances.
