Triphala is a combination of three fruits (harada, amla and behada), which are dried, pulverized and used in equal proportions to formulate the product.
Its historical use as a means of cleansing the digestive system and as a tonic, has been supported by many modern scientific studies which demonstrate the positive effects of the herbs that make it up.
The mechanism of action is not yet known, but as the Memorial Cancer Center claims, it is probably due to the phytochemicals (polyphenols and flavonoids) found in the formula. It has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anticancer properties and has also been shown to be a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from the harmful effects of free radicals. Additionally, it has immunomodulatory properties, meaning it helps the body to modify the immune response, either by increasing or decreasing the ability of the immune system to produce antibodies. Allergies are a result of the overactivity of the immune system that recognizes benign substances as harmful, and produces antibodies to attack them.
Thus, it is sometimes used for the treatment of allergies. It has also been used as an Ayurvedic herb for thousands of years. Traditionally in Ayurvedic medicine it is used to treat anemia, asthma, constipation, chronic ulcers, diarrhea, fever, inflammation, jaundice and obesity.
