Solgar Vitamin B12 500μg: cyanocobalamin in plant capsules

The Solgar Vitamin B12 500μg is a dietary supplement in plant capsules, with 500μg of vitamin B12 in cyanocobalamin form per capsule, a quantity corresponding to 20000% of the Recommended Daily Allowance. The package contains 50 plant capsules and the formula is suitable for vegans.

It is aimed at adults who follow a plant-based or limited animal food diet, those who want a high and consistent daily B12 intake, and those who prefer capsules instead of sublingual or injectable formulations.

Why B12 is the vitamin most easily missing from a plant-based dish

Cobalamin is the only vitamin that contains a metal in its core, cobalt, and it is produced exclusively by microorganisms. Plants do not synthesize it and do not accumulate it, so it almost exclusively reaches the diet through animal foods, i.e. meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products. Anyone who removes these categories from their plate at the same time removes the main dietary source of B12.

Its absorption is also the most complex of all vitamins. It requires an acidic gastric environment to be released from food proteins and a specific protein, the intrinsic factor, to pass into the final part of the small intestine. This mechanism has a limited capacity per meal, which explains why B12 supplements circulate in doses far above the Recommended Daily Allowance: a small percentage of the dose passes by passive diffusion, regardless of the intrinsic factor. B12 is water-soluble and the excess is excreted.

How Solgar positions the product

According to the product presentation by Solgar itself, the vitamin B12 of this preparation is presented as follows:

  • Contributes to reducing the feeling of fatigue and tiredness. This is an approved claim, concerning the feeling of fatigue in daily life and not any disease.
  • Contributes to the release of energy from food. B12 acts as a cofactor in the metabolism that converts nutrients into usable energy.
  • Contributes to the functioning of the nervous system. The vitamin is involved in the maintenance of myelin, the insulating sheath of nerve fibers.
  • Contributes to psychological and cognitive function. The wording refers to normal function and not improvement beyond it.
  • Contributes to the functioning of the immune system. The approved claim concerns the normal functioning of the immune system.
  • Contributes to the metabolism of homocysteine and the formation of red blood cells. B12 cooperates with folic acid in these processes.

The above formulations are attributed to the manufacturer and correspond to approved health claims for vitamin B12.

Frequently asked questions

What is cyanocobalamin?

It is a stable form of vitamin B12, the most studied and widely used in supplements. The body converts it into its active forms.

Why is the dose 20000% of the daily reference value?

Because the absorption of B12 from the intestine is limited per intake. High doses ensure that a small but constant percentage will pass by passive diffusion. The excess is excreted, as the vitamin is water-soluble.

Is it suitable for vegans?

Yes. The capsule is of plant origin and the manufacturer states that the product is suitable for vegans.

How long does the package last?

With one capsule per day, the 50 plant capsules cover 50 days.

How does it differ from a B complex?

Here you get only B12, in a high dose. A B complex provides smaller doses of several B vitamins together. If your goal is specifically B12, the monotherapy gives greater control over the dose.

When during the day should I take it?

Any time, preferably with a meal, as stated by the manufacturer.

Does it contain gluten or soy?

No. According to the manufacturer's statement, the product does not contain wheat, gluten, soy or dairy products.

How do I know if I need B12?

Only with laboratory testing and evaluation by a doctor. The supplement does not replace a diagnosis.

* Health claims approved under Regulation (EC) 1924/2006. The product is not intended for the prevention, treatment or diagnosis of a human disease.
