Ubiquinol is the active form of coenzyme Q10. CoQ10 is found in all high-energy cells, muscle cells and especially in heart muscle cells.
People with heart failure have low levels of CoQ10 in their bodies. Research studies suggest that the use of CoQ10 improves symptoms, functional capacity, and quality of life in patients with heart failure.
The Q-SYMBIO study is the first double-blind study that investigated the positive effects of CoQ10 on functional capacity, morbidity, and mortality in patients with chronic heart failure.
The study - lasting 2 years - was conducted with the participation of 420 patients with heart failure and was presented at Heart Failure 2013, the annual conference of the European Society of Cardiology.
According to the results, individuals who took 100 mg CoQ10, three times a day, showed a better picture of their heart health.
Specifically i) CoQ10 contributed by 50%: to the reduction of the risk of adverse cardiovascular events and to the reduction of deaths ii) patients showed lower levels of cardiovascular mortality and were hospitalized less often compared to the other patients iii) in the group that received CoQ10, fewer adverse events were observed compared to the individuals in the other group (placebogroup).
