Solgar Griffonia 5-HTP Complex: four ingredients in one capsule

The Solgar Griffonia 5-HTP Complex is a dietary supplement in phytocapsules, with 100mg 5-HTP from Griffonia simplicifolia seed extract, 100mg valerian root extract, 56.3mg magnesium and 10mg vitamin B6 per phytocapsule. The package contains 30 phytocapsules and the dose is just one capsule per day, i.e. a one-month supply.

It is aimed at adults with a demanding daily schedule, those who want to cover their magnesium and vitamin B6 intake through a single daily intake, and those who prefer a complex formula instead of three separate preparations.

What is 5-HTP and where does it come from

5-HTP, i.e. L-5-hydroxytryptophan, is a derivative of the amino acid tryptophan. It is found in remarkable concentrations in the seeds of an African climbing plant, Griffonia simplicifolia, which grows in West Africa. This is where the raw material for the preparations is obtained. In this particular formula, 334mg of seed extract is needed to yield 100mg of 5-HTP, a ratio that shows the degree of concentration of the raw material.

The formula does not stop there. It also adds valerian root extract (Valeriana officinalis), one of the most studied herbs of the European tradition, as well as two nutrients with approved health claims: magnesium in oxide and diglycinate form, and vitamin B6 as pyridoxine hydrochloride. 5-HTP and valerian do not have an approved health claim, so they are described here as components of the composition. The claims for normal psychological function and reduction of fatigue are based on magnesium and vitamin B6.

How does Solgar position the product

According to the product presentation by Solgar, the preparation is positioned as follows:

  • It is a complex of ingredients for those experiencing the stress of modern life. The wording describes the target audience for the formula rather than any effect.
  • It combines 5-HTP from Griffonia seeds, magnesium and vitamin B6. This is an accurate description of the composition and sources of the ingredients.
  • Magnesium and B6 are associated with normal psychological function. Both have this approved claim.*
  • Magnesium and B6 are associated with reducing fatigue and tiredness. This is also an approved claim for both nutrients.*
  • The formula contains valerian root extract. Valerian is a herb with a long traditional use in Europe. The related health claims are under evaluation by EFSA, so only the presence and quantity are mentioned here.**
  • Emphasis is placed on taking just one capsule per day. The reference is to the ease of dosing.

The above statements are attributed to the manufacturer. 5-HTP and valerian do not have an approved health claim from EFSA and remain the subject of research, so they cannot be accompanied by a promise of effect on mood, stress or sleep.

  • 5-HTP, 100mg per phytocapsule, from 334mg extract of Griffonia simplicifolia seed. A derivative of tryptophan, with no approved health claim.
  • Valerian root extract (Valeriana officinalis), 100mg per phytocapsule. A herb with a long traditional use, with related claims under evaluation.**

Who is it suitable for

It suits adults who want a concentrated formula with magnesium and vitamin B6 in one daily dose. It suits those who are particularly interested in plant-based 5-HTP and want a 100mg dose with a known extract ratio. It suits those who follow a vegan diet, as the formula is declared vegan. It is not suitable for those taking medication that affects serotonin.

The product is a dietary supplement and does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment. Long-term sleep or mood problems require a doctor's assessment.
