Milk thistle is native mainly to the Mediterranean basin, while it is cultivated in the rest of Europe and South America. The first references to the plant were made by Theophrastus in the 4th century BC where it is referred to as "Pternix". Subsequently, Dioscorides recommends "Mega Centaurion", or "Silybum" for wound healing. Pliny the Elder also refers to it, while during the Middle Ages many botanists recommend the plant for various uses.
The English botanist Nicholas Culpeper recommends it as an excellent remedy for bile and spleen, while at the beginning of the 20th century a school of botanist-therapists, called "Eclectics", use milk thistle extract for "Hepatic congestion".
Finally after 1960 the use of the plant spread widely, starting from Germany, where research on it began simultaneously with its use.
