Topical Treatment

Topical treatment for spots: precision care for a small area

There is a category of formulations that are not intended for the entire face. They are dense concentrates, rollers, sticks and patches, made to stay on a specific spot and only there. The logic is simple: the smaller the application surface, the higher concentration of active ingredients the skin can tolerate without generalized irritation.

The misconception here is that the strongest is always the best. A concentrate applied to the entire face or to an already irritated area can cause a reaction and, subsequently, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is exactly what you wanted to avoid. Topical treatment is a targeting tool, not a speed tool.

Forms and when each one is suitable

Roller and pen

The application nozzle leaves a thin line of product with millimeter precision. Convenient for a few, well-defined spots on the cheekbones or forehead, and for use outside the home.

Concentrated gel and drops

Higher concentrations of acids or factors that interfere with melanin synthesis. They require consistent, evening application and patience for twelve weeks.

Patches and tinted stick

Patches keep the active ingredient in contact with the skin for hours, while tinted sticks with a protection index cover and shield the spot visually during the day. They are the most practical solution for anyone who wants an immediate visual effect.

Active ingredients you encounter

• Tranexamic acid, often in formulations for discolorations with hormonal background.
• Alpha hydroxy acids in stronger concentrations than in a face cream.
• Next-generation retinoids, with gradual release for better tolerance.
• Niacinamide in high percentage, usually in combination with zinc.
• Thioproline and cysteamine derivatives, classic dermocosmetic options for spots.
• SPF 50 filters in day sticks, so the area does not darken again.

Popular options

The Synchroline Thiospot in roller form and the Frezyderm Spot-End in the corrective version are among the most recognizable names in the pharmacy. The TALIKA Pigment Control offers the patch solution, while the Lierac Anti-Dark Spots Protocole provides tinted sticks with a protection index. For a more intensive approach, the NeoRetin Discrom, the Froika Anti-Spot and the La Roche-Posay Mela B3 have steady demand. The Rilastil D-Clar line covers the concentrated drops.

How to apply and what to watch out for

Clean and dry thoroughly. Apply a minimal amount only to the spot, without extending to the healthy skin around it. Wait for it to absorb before applying moisturizer. Do not combine two different concentrates in the same spot and do not use them on a wound, fresh exfoliation or already irritated skin. In the morning, sunscreen is a mandatory step, otherwise the work of the evening application is undone. See options at face sunscreens and combine with a cream for blemishes or a serum for discolorations on the rest of the face.

Frequently asked questions

How often do I apply it?

Start once a day, in the evening. If there is no reaction after two weeks, some formulations allow a second application. Always follow the instructions on the packaging.

It stings the first few days. Is that normal?

A brief sting with acids or retinoids is common. Persistent burning, prolonged redness or peeling means you should reduce the frequency and consult your pharmacist.

Can I apply it to a fresh pimple mark?

Wait until the blemish is completely healed. On an open or inflamed pimple, the concentrate will cause irritation.

Does it work on the hands?

Most forms can also be applied to the back of the hands. The skin there renews more slowly, so it needs more time.
