Hydrating masks: fill the skin with water, not fat

Dehydration is a condition, not a type of skin. Even an oily complexion can be dehydrated, and then it shines and at the same time pulls. Hydrating masks work with hygroscopic ingredients, i.e. molecules that bind water and keep it in the upper layers of the keratin layer. Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, urea at low concentration and trehalose do just that.

The second half of the job is to keep that water from leaving. That’s why the fabric mask or gel sheet acts as a temporary lid: it reduces evaporation for as long as it is on the face and gives the serum time to be absorbed. This is also why the effect is immediate, but does not last for days if there is no consistent face moisturizer behind it.

Texture for the right moment

Fabric masks are for days when the skin looks tired and you want results in twenty minutes. Gels in jars give coolness and are suitable for summer. Leave-on and overnight formulas are for winter evenings, plane trips and for skin that wakes up dull. If there is tingling or redness, soothing formulations are a safer choice than rich ones.

Ingredients that really count

• Hyaluronic acid in multiple molecular weights: works on more than one level.
• Glycerin: the most underrated and most reliable humectant.
• Panthenol: soothes and reduces the feeling of tightness.
• Beta glucan or aloe: for skin that reacts easily.
• Ceramides in small proportion: lock in the moisture that has just entered.
• Niacinamide: supports barrier function.
• Without alcohol high on the list: otherwise the gain is quickly lost.

Popular choices

The Garnier Moisture Bomb and the Garnier SkinActive cover daily, economical use. The Ahava Hyaluronic Acid Leave On and the Korres Greek Yoghurt are among the most sought-after leave-on suggestions, while the Dr.Jart+ Dermask Soothing Hydra Solution and the KOCOSTAR Hyaluronic give the Korean style in single dose. For more intensive evenings there are the URIAGE Age Absolu, the Avene Les Essentiels and the TALIKA Cica Repair+.

When and how to enter the routine

This is one of the few categories of masks that can withstand daily use for a period, especially in fabric form. Fifteen to twenty minutes is enough. Do not let it dry on you, because then the fabric works in reverse. After removal do not rinse: spread the residue and put your cream on top, so as to lock in the moisture. The overnight version comes last and replaces the night cream instead of being added to it.

Frequently asked questions

I have oily skin, do I need a hydrating mask?

Probably yes. Shine does not mean water abundance. Choose a gel or fabric texture without heavy oils.

When should I put it on?

Two to three times a week covers most needs. In a very dry environment or after sun, it can also be on consecutive evenings.

Why does my skin pull again the next morning?

Usually because the step that locks in moisture is missing. Without a cream on top, the hyaluronic acid evaporates along with the water it bound.

Can I put serum before the mask?

Yes, and it often helps. A hydrating serum underneath the fabric mask is better absorbed because evaporation is limited.

The above are general information on hydrating cosmetics. If dryness persists despite care, consult your pharmacist.
