Hypersensitive - Irritated

Sensitive and reactive skin: fewer ingredients, better tolerance

Reactive or irritable skin is called skin that reacts to stimuli that go unnoticed by most: temperature changes, hard water, fragrance, a new product, even stress. The reaction manifests as tingling, burning, redness or tightness, often without visible damage. It is not a skin type in the classical sense but a state of tolerance, and it can coexist with dry, combination or oily skin.

The most misunderstood point is that sensitive does not mean allergic. Allergic reaction is immunological and consistently recurs with the same ingredient. In reactive skin, the reaction is mainly neurosensory and varies from day to day. That’s why a product may help in October and irritate in February.

How to read a label for sensitive skin

The rule is simple: the shorter the list, the fewer chances of reaction. Look for indications of fragrance-free, alcohol-free and free of essential oils. Pay attention to the difference between unscented and fragrance-free: the former may contain masking aromatic substances. Sterile or tightly sealed pump packages reduce the need for preservatives and are a sensible choice for highly reactive skin.

• Distilled water: a soothing base in many dermatological lines.
• D-panthenol and allantoin: soothe and give a sense of comfort.
• Centella asiatica: also known as cica, popular for its soothing effect.
• Ceramides and squalane: strengthen the barrier, which is almost always weakened in reactive skin.
• Niacinamide in low percentage: improves the appearance of redness, but in high concentrations it may be irritating.
• Prebiotics: support the microbiome balance.

The 48-hour test

Before applying a new product to your whole face, test it for two nights on a small area next to your jawline. Introduce one product at a time and leave at least one week between additions to know what to blame if something doesn’t suit you.

Frequently recommended lines

The La Roche-Posay Toleriane is the most recognizable line for intolerant skin, with versions in cream and light texture, while the La Roche-Posay Lipikar covers soap-free cleansing. The Avene Tolerance relies on minimal formulation, the Bioderma Sensibio has options for every level of dryness and the URIAGE Tolederm follows the same philosophy. The Eubos Cool & Calm targets redness-prone skin, the ADERMA with oatmeal is a classic choice for irritated skin and the Froika Sensitive offers light and rich textures. For those looking for something more modern, the Dr.Jart+ Cicapair has a steady following.

What to do when the skin is in crisis

Reduce the routine to three steps: gentle cleansing with lukewarm water, a simple soothing cream, sunscreen for sensitive skin in the morning. Temporarily stop acids, retinoids, fragrant products and exfoliating tools. If the redness is permanent, dilated vessels appear or there is intense itching, it is most likely a dermatological issue rather than a cosmetic choice, so a doctor’s evaluation is needed. If there is also severe dryness, see the category for very dry skin, while for a neutral daily base there are options for all skin types. Full picture at facial moisturizers.

Frequently asked questions

Does tingling in the first seconds mean it works?

No. It indicates that the barrier allows ingredients to irritate the nerve endings. If it lasts more than a minute or recurs, stop using the product.

Are natural and organic products safer?

Not automatically. Many plant extracts and essential oils are among the most common irritants. Judge by the ingredient list, not the label.

Can I use retinol?

Many can, with very low concentration, twice a week and always over a moisturizer. Start after the skin has stabilized and not during a flare-up.
