Cleansing Gel for Seborrheic Dermatitis

Cleansing gel for acne-prone skin: the first step that makes all the difference

In skin with an oily complexion, cleansing is the step that makes the biggest difference between right and wrong. The first impulse is to dry out the oiliness with something strong. However, the result is the opposite: when the surface lipids are forcibly removed, the barrier weakens, the tugging sensation intensifies, and the oiliness returns within a few hours.

A good cleansing gel does something more discreet. It removes excess sebum, product residues and loose flakes, leaving the skin clean but not dry. The criterion is simple: if your face pulls after washing, the formula is too aggressive for you.

What distinguishes a good formula

• pH close to the skin's natural pH, around 5, not classic soap.
• Mild surfactants, without high-ratio sulfates.
• Piroctone olamine or zinc pyrithione, for oily and greasy areas.
• Salicylic acid in low concentration, which loosens the scales without rubbing.
• Soothing ingredients like panthenol, allantoin or thermal water.
• Unscented and alcohol-free, two of the most common reasons for itching.

Textures and sizes

Clear gel

The most common form. It foams lightly, rinses easily and suits a face with visible shine in the T-zone.

Creamy gel or cleansing lotion

For flare-ups, when redness and dryness coexist with oiliness. It leaves a thin comfort film.

Large volume packages

When the same preparation is used on the body or by more family members, bottles of 400 ml and above are more economical.

Popular options

The La Roche-Posay Effaclar holds the top spot in demand, both in gel form and in micro-peeling with salicylic acid. The Avène Cleanance is a steady choice for mild daily cleansing, while the Froika DS and Froika AC cover face and body. The Synchroline Aknicare and MEY Dermopurifiant target more persistent conditions, the Apivita Just Bee Clear for those who prefer a plant-based approach and the Castalia Dermopur for a more economical package.

How and how often

Twice a day is enough, morning and evening. Use lukewarm water, never hot, and a small amount of product with your fingers, not brushes or sponges. Leave the gel on the skin for ten to fifteen seconds before rinsing it off, so it has time to act. Pat dry with a clean towel. During flare-ups, limit cleansing to once in the evening and follow up with a light texture from the moisturizing creams for oily acne. The overall context and factors that worsen the condition are described in the oily acne category.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need double cleansing?

Only if you wear long-lasting sunscreen or makeup. Otherwise, one pass with the gel is enough and less irritating.

Can I use it on my scalp?

Only if the packaging explicitly states so. Scalp shampoos have a different composition and concentration.

My skin shines throughout the day even after cleansing.

This is expected. A mattifying tissue or a mattifying product helps more than an additional cleansing, which usually worsens the cycle.

It stings around the nose. What do I do?

Stop using it and ask for an alternative with a neutral, unscented composition. Persistent stinging is not normal.
