Hair Loss: What Really Happens in the Hair Cycle

Each follicle works on its own clock. It spends years in the growth phase and a few months in the resting phase, at the end of which the hair falls out and the cycle starts again. Fifty to one hundred hairs per day are a normal renewal, not a problem. We talk about hair loss when the ratio changes: when many follicles enter the resting phase simultaneously, or when the hair that grows back is consistently thinner than before.

This is where the biggest misconception lies, because two different conditions are constantly confused. Telogen effluvium is diffuse shedding that appears two to three months after an event: childbirth, high fever, sudden weight loss, surgery, prolonged stress, low iron stores. Normal-thickness hairs fall from all over the head and the picture usually restores itself within months, provided the cause is corrected. Androgenetic alopecia is another story: hereditary sensitivity of the follicles, gradual miniaturization of the hair, thinning that first appears in the part and on top. The cosmetic products on this page support the healthy appearance of the hair and tone the scalp. They do not change the hereditary pattern and do not replace a diagnosis.

Where to Start, Depending on the Case

On a Daily Basis

Shampoos for hair loss clean gently, keep the root light and prepare the scalp to better accept what comes from above.

Targeted Topical Application

Lotions for hair loss are the form for almost daily use all over the area that concerns you, while ampoules give a measured dose for six to twelve week cycles. The choice between them is a matter of consistency and budget.

Support from Within

Dietary supplements make sense when there is a real deficiency or increased need, such as in childbirth or restrictive diets. They work over months, because that is the follicle's pace.

When the Issue Goes Beyond the Shelf

Minoxidil is a drug, not a cosmetic, and its use is discussed with the pharmacist or dermatologist. A fall that lasts more than three months requires laboratory investigation: complete blood count, iron and especially ferritin, thyroid hormones and, where needed, hormonal control. What Do the Ingredients Say on the Label

• Aminexil: the best-known active ingredient of dermatocosmetic lotions.
• Caffeine and niacinamide: tone the scalp and improve the feeling of density in the comb.
• Cystine, methionine, arginine: sulfur amino acids, structural components of keratin.
• Biotin: contributes to the maintenance of the normal condition of the hair.*
• Zinc and selenium: contribute to the maintenance of the normal condition of the hair.*
• Iron: contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.*
• Plant extracts: sea buckthorn, daphne and rosemary give a feeling of freshness to the root.

Series Consistently Requested at the Counter

For oral formulations, Bailleul Cystiphane with cystine, vitamin B6 and zinc is the most discussed option, with Priorin Extra following. Ducray Anacaps, Epicrin and Vitabiotics Perfectil cover the same need with a different composition. For topical care, Vichy Dercos Aminexil is the reference for ampoules and serum. The Apivita Tonic with sea buckthorn has separate versions for women and men, Frezyderm Hair Force follows the same logic with a simpler formula, and Ducray Creastim is the classic lotion for periods of intense seasonal shedding.

How to Establish a Routine That Lasts

The follicle does not respond in weeks. Each evaluation is done in the quarter, and the most useful tool is a photo of the part under the same light, on the day you start. The lotion or ampoule goes on dry or slightly damp hair, with the tip of the dropper on the skin, not on the lengths, and is followed by a minute of massage with the fingertips. The three mistakes that cancel the effort are stopping in the first month, rubbing hard with the towel on wet hair, and tight hairstyles that pull on the root.

FAQs

I lost a lot of hair after giving birth. Is it permanent?

It is typical telogen effluvium and starts two to four months later. In most cases, the picture returns within six to twelve months. If you are breastfeeding, ask the pharmacist which formulations are appropriate.

Do more hairs fall in the fall? Is that true?

Yes, there is seasonal variation. Usually the increase is transient and lasts a few weeks.

Does frequent washing increase shedding?

No. The hairs in the shower have already completed their cycle. If you thin the washes, you will see them all at once next time.

Can I take a supplement without tests?

It is preferable to have a check-up, especially for ferritin and thyroid. Iron, in particular, is not taken without a justified indication.

My husband has the same problem. Do they use the same products?

Most formulas are common, but male androgenetic alopecia has a different pattern of evolution and deserves separate evaluation.
